Iconic Taupo tourism operator takes top award

05 / 08 / 2017

After earlier winning the Strettons Excellence in Business – Large Business Award, a highly commended certificate in the Wairakei Resort Excllence in Leadership category and a highly commended certificate in the Quality Print Excellence in Sustainability category, Barry Kirkland, owner of Taupo DeBretts Spa Resort, was humbled to accept the BNZ Overall Business of the Year 2017.

“We’ve been in this business for over 30 years,” he said. “We’ve seen the ups and downs of Taupo, and grown our business from something that was at times struggling, to a successful operation with over 60 staff. Our team are great and this award is for everyone who works so hard at DeBretts.”

Mr Kirkland was quick to praise his Operations Manager, Mirela Petrar for her dedication and work, and noted her rise through the company ranks from housekeeper to senior manager as a reflection of the values of supporting professional development within the business.

Other big award winners included Chamberlain Carpentry & Joinery who scooped the More FM Excellence in Business – Small Business Award and won the Wairakei Resort Excellence in Leadership trophy; and Hear Better Audiology who collected the Tomahawk Excellence in Emerging Business trophy, the Enterprise Great Lake Taupo Excellence in Innovation award and a highly commended certificate in the Vine Eatery & Bar Excellence in Community Contribution category.

Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge also picked up two awards, collecting a highly commended certificate in the Enterprise Great Lake Taupo Excellence in Innovation category before going on to win the Legend Excellence in Business – Not For Profit award.

More than 350 business owners, managers, staff and dignitaries packed the function rooms at Wairakei Resort on Friday evening for the biennial celebration, hosted by celebrity MC Mike Puru (of TV3’s The Café).

Presented jointly by the Taupo Chamber of Commerce & Industry and Towncentre Taupo, the Business Awards programme saw entrants attend a series of workshops before submitting a comprehensive written application that was then judged by the Waikato Management School At Waikato University. Once the finalists had been selected for each category, these businesses were then visited by Head Judge, Howard Davey, as well as being mystery shopped. The combined scores from these three aspects were used to identify the winners.
